In London from Monday for 2 weeks

I am in Central London (Marylebone) for 2 weeks from Monday

I have appointments in the morning but will be free from about 11am every day

Please can anyone help with recommendations on what to do

I have done all the usual touristy stuff before, so was wondering if anyone could help with ideas to kill time really.

Also is it best to get an oyster card.

I will be there with my wife.

Thanks in advance

The usual question - what sort of things do you and your wife like doing? Art, architecture, food, music (ancient and modern), history........

Depending what you want to do, then an Oyster card each for tube travel would seem like a good plan.

Well we like Comedy, maybe a show, just anything really we are fairly interested in loads of things

Also if you do not spend all of your allocation on the Oyster card can you get a refund?

Thanks

You can get a refund at a tube station ticket office for unused "pay as you go" credit on an Oyster card. There are rules governing how much you can get back on the spot.

You cannot get a refund on "unused" days of a TravelCard on Oyster (or a paper TravelCard, for that matter).

The rules for whether you get a refund on the spot for unused credit are about how much the balance is, and how you paid for it. If your balance is less than the house limit (which currently seems to be £10), and you always topped up using the same means as when you made the initial payment, you can get a refund on the spot using the same method - cash if you always used cash, to the credit card if you always used the same card. Outside of those conditions, you need to fill in a form and wait for a cheque, in sterling.

You might be interested in some of the attractions, etc that form part of the 2-for-1 deals: www.daysoutguide.co.uk

To take advantage of these you and your wife will need Travelcards purchased from a rail station (not a tube station). 7 day cards would be best - £29.20 pp for Zones 1 & 2, and you would not then need Oyster Cards

There are some great ideas in the daysoutguide referred to above. In addition to the 2-for-1s, there are other attractions listed that might inspire you. The are some shows included as part of the 2-for-1, though you must book these in advance. In addition, there is the reduced price tkts booth in Leicester Sq, where you can pick up some good show deals on the day. http://www.tkts.co.uk/

If you want to use the 2-for-1's, remember you must buy your travelcards from a National Rail ticket office (eg. Marylebone) and not the tube ticket office. If you are coming to London by train then the tickets will be good for the 2-for-1s and you wont have to worry about the travelcards- remember to hold on to your train tickets when you arrive and don't put them in the automatic barriers. However, if you do get Travelcards it will have all travel covered (tube, bus, rail, DLR), plus discounts on river services. www.tfl.gov.uk
