One of my new souveniers on vacation to different countries is to pick up children's books (for a twinkle in the sky!). What are your favorite classic British children's books?

The William books by Richmal Crompton. Great reading for adults and children, and an amusing portrayal of life in England from the 1920s to the 60s. Dramatised many times, this is an excerpt from one of the versions:

The entire Beatrix Potter series - i had all 33+ as a child. Peter Rabbit is actually the least charming. Try "Tale of a very bad rabbit" or "The pie & the patty pan."

The Wind in the Willows, The Secret Garden, The Narnia Series, Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes (do kids even learn these anymore?),Alice Books (Lewis Carroll), The Golden Compass Trilogy for more modern British books, The Phantom Tollbooth, Treasure Island

Wind In The Willows, the Narnia series (Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Lion Witch and Wardrobe, Silver Chair), and the Beatrix Potter collection ....

.... and talking of Potter, do they count as classics yet?

Oh delicious thread!

Definitely Winnie Ther Pooh. (did you know he was named after a real London swan?)

In the same vein - to find out how it all started :

AA Milne's "When we were Very Young" and "Now we are Six" brilliant children's poetry.- buy the proper hardbacks with the dust sheets.

CS Lewis - Narnia series, yes.

Beatrix Potter - totally agreed.

Roalk Dahl - classics

The Rev W Awrdy - Thomas the Tank Engine series
