Heathrow Terminal 5 to Windsor

We plan to leave our luggage at our hotel near Terminal 5 and spend Sunday in Windsor prior to flying out on Monday, April 23. How best to travel to Windsor for the day from Heathrow and how far is it? Do we need to purchase Windsor Castle tickets in advance? Any advice welcomed.

We considered taking the train from Paddington to Windsor and then to our hotel later, but don't want to be burdened with our carry on luggage all day.

The easiest would be to ask your hotel to order you a taxi. Should cost around £20 and take 20 minutes or less.

(Or you could get a hotel in Windsor anyway, and just get a taxi to take you the airport on the monday)

You don't need to pre-book tickets, but you may find the queues starting to build up after Easter. To be honest, it's no hassle pre-booking the tickets on-line and picking them up at the castle. It does at least mean you have a shorter queue than the general admission queue which does tend to snake down the road.

You absolutely can't do this, as there is no facility to store luggage in Windsor. Luggage is not permitted on Castle grounds unless it is small enough to pass through an airport style security scanner. If it doesn't go through, you won't be going in, period.

Sorry if I seem blunt, but I would hate for you to be disappointed.

Based on advice from LauraRW (above) when I asked the same question for our upcoming trip, I emailed several places to see costs.

The most reasonable was: Windsor Cars at £15 each way, including a stop back at the hotel to pick up our luggage on the way to the airport. The person who answered the email said they only need about 20 minutes notice for a pick up (although if we decide to do this, we will call and book the night before).

HTH and thanks again to LauraRW.

Both Windsor Cars and Five Star are reliable and cheap. I would also advise on using one of the above companies to take you back to the airport since they are cheaper than the taxis at the rank, just outside the Castle. There is also a painfully slow bus service which is best avoided.

The bus service is route 77 - see

It takes about 45 minutes.
