most economical transportation from Heathrow to Tilbury

There are 4 of us traveling from Heathrow to Tilbury port to catch a cruise. What is the most economical and easiest way to go from the airport to the cruise port?

Are you arriving on the day of the cruise or the day before? Do you plan to travel in the next few weeks or in June, July or August? Do you need to be at Tilbury on a weekday or at the weekend?

Are you flying with BA from SAN or another carrier? Are all four travelling adults or are there children under age 16 in the party? And do you plan to travel light or have a fair amount of luggage along for the journey?

Let us know a bit more, please.

Economical and easy are polar opposites on this route as Heathrow is well to the west of London whilst Tilbury is well to the east. In short if I was you I wouldn't start from here.

Easiest - and least stressful - would be to use a car service to take you the 70 miles around London on the M25. This would take about 90 minutes

Economical - take the Tube to Hammersmith, walk the few feet to the adjacent platform, Tube to Tower Hill, then walk to Fenchurch Street train station and take the train to Tilbury Town which I recall is near the cruise terminal. This would take about 2 hours

If you want to do this during August then I wish you luck.

You would probably still need to take a taxi from Tilbury Town station to the docks - it depends how much luggage you are 'hefting'!:

As the old farmer might say. "If I was going there, I wouldn't start from here."

Nice one Alan.

Seriously though, take a car.

======

Ah, the old cake and eat it. Did you want easiest? Or did you want most economical? You can't have both (well, I suppose you could if you split the group into two, one could take the easiest and one the economical :-).

We are, indeed, flying BA from SAN - 4 adults. We're staying at a hotel on Bath Road on a recommendation from one of our friends. We don't want to tote large suitcases up and down the Tube which is why we had hoped there would be a train or something from the airport to Fenchurch St. Station and then we could train from there to Tilbury. If all else fails, we will try to hire a private car or something to take us either to Fenchurch station or Tilbury, Our friends thought maybe the hotel could arrange a private car or public transportation of some kind. Any suggestions is appreciated! We really appreciate that people who are familiar with all the areas of London are so will to help those of us who are not. Thank you, thank you!!!

Staying near Heathrow is a false economy, as you will have to travel either from the hotel to Fenchurch Street or to Tilbury - and you'll have very little of interest nearby except Bath Road.

If you ask the hotel to arrange transport you'll pay well over the odds, even for the journey from the hotel to the city centre.

If you're arriving the day before you need to be at Tilbury - and what day of the week is that, please - then cancel the hotel in Bath Road and book a hotel in central London.

Depending on when you plan to travel you may make the journey from LHR to Tower Hill in about 50 minutes, with one easy cross-platform change en route. There are 35 steps up from the District line platform to the ticket hall at Tower Hill station but that's the worst of it; the walk from T5 Arrivals to the Underground platform is easy and step free.

There are a handful of hotels within a five minute walk of Tower Hill and Fenchurch Street stations, including two that are in the budget range but are more than acceptable for a one night stay. Other hotels near the station have a bit more to offer but will cost more.

Please let us know when you plan to travel - day and month - and the time of day you need to be at Tilbury.

Have you checked with the ferry company? If they are offering transfers this may be the solution to your problem.

Also check out the 'cruise critic' website as you might get some travel tips from there.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Our friends and we have decided to hire a private car to take us from the airport to Tilbury cruise terminal. We haven't decided whether to stay near Heathrow airport and travel Monday morning (5/28) or go the day before (when we arrive at Heathrow) to Tilbury and find a hotel in Orsett or Horndon on the Hill (we found these names on another blog) and go to the cruise terminal the next day (Monday).

We are looking at www.airportcitytransfer.com for car service. They seem to have a good fare and will meet us at the airport with a sign. They also advertise that they don't charge for waiting or transportation problems on the highway. Our friends say they will be tired by the time we get to London and don't want to lug suitcases on the underground or taxi and train it to Tilbury so I guess this is our best solution.

We really appreciate your kindness helping us with this decision.

Sone information on Tilbury here:

information-britain.co.uk/county26/…

IIWY I would try and stay as near to Tilbury as possible if you have changed your plans to stay 'cruise end' rather than 'airport end' of your journey.

You could then visit the historic Tilbury Fort:

english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/…

Or the Coalhouse Fort (if they are having one of their open days):

Or you could take the Ferry across to Gravesend to see Pocahontas....
