tour on the river thames

we will be in greenwich july 12..cruise...and wish to do a tour of as much as we can possibly see for an afternoon from the river...

there are so many companies that offer thames river cruises...

can anyone here give me some advice....

all we want is to travel by boat from greenwich and back to as much of the river as we can do....no dinner, no lunch....

what boat/service would you chose?

We used City Cruises and enjoyed it a few years ago. You can take it back to Westminster Pier by the Houses of Parliament. We also did their NYE cruise this past New Years and liked that too.

It's sort of like a river bus - with a few stops on the way. It goes all the way down to the O2 so make sure you get on in the right direction! You will enjoy it - Greenwich is at her best seen from the River, and you will also pass Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Shakespear's Globe, South Bank, London Eye. There is a bar and toilets on board as well.

City Cruises is a company. They have a ticket window at the dock in Greenwich. You go there and tell them where you want to go and they sell you a ticket. We did this in Oct 2008 and had no problem just buying a ticket. You can either buy round trip or one way. I don't know that it's worth the money to go both ways unless you want to see one side of the river one way and the other the other (they talk about both sides going both ways). If you don't want to pay for round trip, you can take the Thames Clipper (commuter boat, no commentary) or the tube/DLR back to Greenwich.

I think they also have a River Rover ticket which is hop on hop off, but we didn't do that, just the cruise from Greenwich to Westminster.

probably easier to do round trip then to figure out how to get back on tube or buses...and more pleasant maybe....i looked at the cost and it was 5.25L..pp each way...we are 60 so it is a senior rate....

all weather depending, if it is a drenching day, we may reconsider....

You can sit indoors / downstairs if it is raining.

The boat we've been on is the Thames Clipper:

Very flexible, nice boats. Cheaper if you are using with other forms of transport (it doesn't sound as if you will be). No commentary on board - but might be an option for returning to Greenwich.

would you do this thames river cruise in the evening?

or is it better to see spots in the day time....

if we got off at westminster and walked about before returning back to greewich port, what are some things close by to see?
