Personally I wouldn't bother unless you are in the area for another reason

Yes, it started running on 28th June.

Here's everything you need to know about it. Queues seem to be virtually non-existent at present but we cannot predict the Olympic effect (or the effect of some decent weather!) .

Plus using an oystercard avoids the ticket office queues.

We just used our PAYG oystercards (£3.20) and breezed in. It's a sight cheaper than the Eye, and although it's a bit to the east it's a good alternative. It goes from Excel to the O2, so more than just a quick trip across the Thames and it goes quite high. It was windy when we were there giving it an extra 'edge'. They slowed it down because of the wind so we were up for at least 15 minutes.
