Cards to take to Europe

Soon we are traveling to Ireland, UK & Europe. We have been trying to work out which credit/debit cards we should be taking. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Mastercard/Visa is accepted almost everywhere. American Express not so much especially in smaller places due to the high charges they impose on businesses.

What cards do you have?

Take cards that do not put on extra commission for foreign transactions. They have some in UK,so should have them in Oz. Worth checking before you travel.

Safe trip...and Come to Wales!!

If Australia has chip and pin credit cards and you can get one with a 4 digit pin number, do it. Shops still take cards that require a signature, but it is more faff.

Your debit card should also have a 4 digit pin or it won't work in the ATMs and you will only be able to get money by queueing in a bank.

Wales is the same, as are Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland and most other countries in the EU use Euros rather than pounds and with very few exceptions, one form of currency doesn't work where they use the other form of currency.

We have looked into the question of which cards are best for Australians wanting to travel. The 28 Degrees is the best credit card, and Citibank Plus is the best for getting cash out of ATMs.
