Pubs/Restaurants around Kensington

Hello,

I am going to London next week and staying in the Kensington neighbor hood. Does anyone have any reccomendations for some pubs/restaurants for young people in the area? Something on the less costly end would be great. Also, is this a good area for 20-somethings women to be walking around alone?

Kensington covers a large and varied area, some parts are very upmarket, some not so. If you let us know roughly where you are staying, we can give some more detailled advice. You'll be pretty safe anywhere, though. A couple of personal recommendations;

Thank you! We are staying close to the Earl's Court Tube Station.

OK, there are a handful of reasonable pubs around Earl's Court, the Blackbird being a favourite of mine. Nothing fancy, but the pies are good.

To be honest, if you are right by Earls Court station, it is an easy 10 - 15 minute tube ride direct to the West End, (Piccadilly Circus/Leicester Square/Covent Garden), no need to limit yourself to the local area.

You will be absolutely fine and safe walking around London at night. There will a good number of people out at the same time.

I agree with Ealingblue's suggestion--explore the city! A five minute tube ride can take you to another part of town.

Just north of you is the Britannia Pub http://www.britanniakensington.co.uk/ - i really like this place - good food, quiet street, nice atmosphere, very calm neighbourhood. Also, just one street over, is the Abingdon - http://theabingdon.co.uk/ - also recommended. An excellent restaurant not far from you is Whits - very highly rated on TA - http://www.whits.co.uk/ - while not cheap, its not expensive by London standards. I just ate there a couple of weeks ago, and it really is a great spot.

Just a plug for the neighborhood - I stayed a couple of blocks from the Earl's Court tube station last November and as a woman traveling alone I felt perfectly safe in the area, even after dark. Dinner one evening lasted longer than I expected and I found myself on a 20-minute walk back to my hotel through a mostly residential area at 10 pm and it was fine. I like the Kensington area so much that I'm staying there again on an upcoming trip end of September.
