London to Southampton by train

We are taking a cruise from Southampton in Nov. I understand the fast train leaves Waterloo Station (which one??) to go to Southampton.

As we are staying at Hilton Olympia in Kennsington, can we take a train from Kensington Olympia Stn to Waterloo Stn?

Depending on when you plan to travel in November you could take the Overground service from Olympia to Clapham Junction and a slow train from there to Southampton Central.

But Olympia isn't well situated for a cross London journey to Waterloo as there are very few trains a day from that station towards Earl's Court station. …tfl.gov.uk/user/AHF/TLJJP15P1__00006a38.pdf

A better option might be to take a taxi to Earl's Court station for the District or Circle line from there to Embankment, and a change to the Northern or Bakerloo line there for the short journey to Waterloo station. There are stairs to negotiate at Embankment; if you will have a substantial amount of luggage then take the Underground to Westminster, a step free station, and taxi from there to Waterloo.

Before booking directly with the South West Trains website for the journey from Waterloo to Southampton, have a look at fares here: http://uk.megabus.com/megatrain.aspx Again depending on your travel date there are fares from £1 single, plus a 50p booking fee.

With Megatrain tickets you will travel on the same train as other pax, but will have paid considerably less than many of them. Well worth a look.

You can of course get the Overground from Kensington Olympia to Clapham Junction and then a train from Clapham Junction to Waterloo to pick up the fast train from there.

Just take the train from Olympia to Clapham Junction then the direct train to Southampton. No need to head to Waterloo at all.

The fast trains usually go from platform 9 at Clapham Junction. The fastest at 1hr 10mins is at 12 minutes past the hour with one at 46 which takes 1hr 26mins. Going from Waterloo (at 05 & 35 for the fast trains) will allow you a little extra time to board with your luggage and find a seat.

You could also get a train from Victoria to Clapham Junction (usually platforms 13 or 15) and change there.

I will be arriving at London Heathrow. Where do I go to get the train to Southampton? Is there more than one stop in Southampton? I will be staying at the Hilton on Bracken Place, Chilworth

An easier journey may be made by coach. National Express coaches run from Heathrow to Southampton University, nearer your hotel than Southampton Central.

Travel time is about two hours, single fare from £17. Let us know the time and day of the week of your arrival at Heathrow, along with the airline with which you'll travel, as there are coaches from T5 as well as from the Central Bus Station near T1 and T3.
