In terms of size London Zoo is small. The elephants and rhino were moved out to Whipsnade a while ago due to lack of space:

Whipsnade 240 hectares

Chester 45 hectares

London 15 hectares

London isn't a bad zoo but give me Whipsnade or Chester any day.

IMO London Zoo is a very poor experience.

Overpriced and a sad sight to see considering its history

I'm picky about zoos. Saw the same mixed reviews you did, and didn't have high expectations. I was very plesantly surprised. The zoo felt spacious with lots of great animals and displays. I don't remember a lot of reptiles (doesn't mean they weren't there, just that if they were, they weren't memorable) except for a Komono Dragon exhibit that was very nice.

The only negatives I had were

- entrance to the zoo was a bit farther than I expected

- for a zoo, it was pricy (still cheap compared to a fancy meal or show.)

Go early in the day, or late maybe, but for a couple of hours after feeding time, the animals are sleepy and lethargic. I went early afternoon on a Sunday and everybody was sleeping.

We went to Barcelona Zoo in 2011, London Zoo in 2012. In many ways, the zoos were similar. But London was more spreadout... required more walking and had more open park-like space than Barcelona.
