Where are you staying near Russell Square? If each traveller will have no more than one piece of rolling luggage you may take the number 8 bus to High Holborn or the 205 to the junction of Euston Road and Upper Woburn Place. tfl.gov.uk/tfl/…liverpoolstreet-2161.pdf

There are stairs up from the ticket hall level to a bridge across the platform then stairs down for the westbound Circle / Hammersmith & City / Metropolitan line at Liverpool Street. The change at King's Cross for the Piccadilly line involves stairs as well; there are stairs up to the lift level at Russell Square station.

From the ticket hall to the central line at Liverpool Street there are stairs down; for the change at Holborn there are 19 steps up, a walk on the flat of about 20m and a long escalator down to the Piccadilly line platform.

A taxi may cost a little more but with a bit of work you will be able to save elsewhere.

I read somewhere that the amount we pack is reflective of our anxiety level in traveling.

RELAX!

I cannot think of a single holiday where I wished I had packed more. Most times it is the other way around. There is very little in London that you could not buy if you needed it.

If you want to watch your budget and come out about even, you could take the coach from Stansted to Liverpool Street for less than half the price of the StEX. Both Terravision and National Express operate that route. That provides enough cash to cover the taxi.
