lacock or oxford

We have only three days in London. We'd like to go to Lacock or Oxford and can't decide which. Will Oxford be too urban? We will look at Harry Potter sites with a specialist guide to interpret the areas. There are 12 in our family group, seniors to teens to a 10 year old. Thanks for.any input.

»»Will Oxford be too urban?««

Hard to know without knowing your tolerance to urbanity (urbaness?).

Oxford is a small city and therefore as urban as cities tend to be.

To my mind, Oxford is worth more time than just part of a day. Lacock's few charms can easily be fully captured in less than a day. Given your constraints, I suppose you should go to Lacock.

I don't know, I would choose Oxford. My kids enjoyed it a great deal, and we also visited when the grandparents were in town. There is something for everyone, and quite a lot of Harry Potter.

If you have already engaged a specialist guide, why not ask their advice?

Thanks for your input. I'll do a bit more reading on both places, and I will ask our guide. We would need a month or more to see everything we'd love to see.

If there are 12 in your group, no doubt you have your own driver guide and private vehicle.

If this is a themed Harry Potter tour then there is no reason why you cannot viist both they are about 90 minutes apart.

You certainly need a good "Harry Potter" guide at Lacock now to see all the Harry Potter sites as none are now acknowledgeed, even mention of Harry Potter in Lacock Abbey has been withdrawn .

If you just want to viist one place in one day of which Harry Potter features somewhere to keep the kids happy I'd go for Oxford as it has so much to see.

If you have a small bus I'd start out early spend 2 hours in Oxford then move onto Lacock for lunch in the George Inn at Lacock which has lots of pictures inside of the Harry Potter films when shot and also has good food and is a 13th century pub with stocks in the yards etc.

Stonehnenge and bath are all closr to Lacock.

If you do visit Oxford and have a private driver/guide and small bus do get some assurances of where the bus will be parked and if the driver/guide will be able to accompany you into the town itself.

If you only have 3 days and are HP nuts it would seem more sensible to go to the HP studios in Leavesden. That has the strongest HP connection of all of them.

+1 a HP studio tour but you must book tickets in advance - availability is limited and AFAIK they don't sell tickets on the door.

I just added another day in London so we can do both Oxford and Lacock one day and still have time for Leavesden and some free time in the city on the other two days.

Thanks for helping.

Personally, I would just do Oxford, rather than attempt to cram in Lacock as well. There is a great deal to see which is unrelated to its v.recent use as a HP backdrop, and you will reduce your travelling time considerably if you don't add on a visit to the West Country as well.

Hi there

Lacock is just a few miles from here and although I drive through it several times a week, I never get fed up with visiting the village. There's plenty to see, the Abbey, the grounds, the Fox Talbot Museum, lots of little shops, some good cafes and tea rooms three decent pubs in the village and a couple partway up Bowden Hill.

Easy to combine Lacock with other pretty villages if that's your thing, both Castle Combe and Biddestone are close by or if ancient history is the draw, then Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow are within easy reach of Lacock and all three sit close together.

Lacock will be the only small villlage on our itinerary. That has a definite appeal. Thank you, GB for highlighting nearby attractions. We are touring Oxford, then spending the night near Lacock, so we should be able to include some of these before returning to London the next day. I have some new places to research. It is so helpful to have trip advisor recommendations.
