Can you do some sightseeing "VIA" the Tube?

I know this is a rather odd subject but when I first was thinking of moving to where I am now, I once visited and took the Light Rail going in 4 directions (N-S-W-E) to get an idea of the environment and different neighborhoods. The cost was minimal and I had time to spare.

I am thinking, can this be done in London (i.e., visiting suburbs via the Tube) and if so, what be the best routes to take, and what would be the best starting points?

I just want to stay "WITHIN" London confines though and not veer too far off where I will not find my way back.

Thank you.
