ideas on what to do arriving at london afternoon

We are arriving at Gatwick at 16:15 so I am thinking we will be at our hotel on Sussex Gardens at about 18:00 . Any ideas on what to do for the rest of the afternoon? We want to go somewhere near or eays to get to. Easy thing would be to just go on Oxford Street and do some shopping before closing hours. But for my friend this is the first time to London so I don't want for her first impression to just throw her to Oxford crowds and just shopping. We will be staying for 4 days and our plan is to visit British Museum, Big Ben , London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Harrods, Trafagal Square, Notting Hill, Govent Garden. But most sight seeings are better to see with day light. Any suggestions on what to do on our first afternoon? Does Govent Garden sound like a good idea?

What about St. Christopher's Place?

When are you coming? 6pm in winter is very different to 6pm during summer.

As for St Christopher's Place, well, it's just off Oxord St so you're hardly going out of your way to avoid it.

Much of Oxford Street has late night closing on a Thursday - most to 8.00 p.m., some to 9.00 p.m.

Most of Westfield White City is open to 10.00 p.m. (Monday to Saturday), to 6.00 p.m. on Sundays.

The British Museum is open until 8.00 p.m. on Fridays.

You could take a bus along Oxford Street for the view and orientation purposes. If anything catches your fancy, then get off and wander and relax and enjoy.

We are arriving on the 7th of March , that's Thursday. We were thinking maybe we could go to the hotel , leave luggage and then go out for a drink? any nice places that are easy to get to for two ladies in tight budget (15-20 pounds per person)

Just round the corner on Bathurst Street is a nice indian restaurant called Spice of India, there is also a french restaurant next to it.

The Victoria at the end of Sussex Place is a Pub offering usual pub meals.

If you want cheapish quick meal, head to Pizza Hut, eat all you can buffet, monday to friday before 3pm, only about £7.50 per person. nearest one to you is in south side of Oxford st, 150m from Marble Arch.

I was thinking a place to drink a coctail or something. It would be nice to have a view of city lights. Anyways , something more than Pizza Hut or usual pub. Is it too much to ask in such low budget?

It is hard to say, eating out in London is not cheap.

Drinks in pubs are gonna be around £4 a pint / £4.50 glass of wine. Restaurants usually charge more, a proper cocktail will be at least ££10.

Food - cheapest pub main course will be £8-10, most pubs will charge £10-15. Cheaper chain restaurants will charge around £12-£16.

So restaurants like Bella Italia do an early bird 2 course menu for something like £15.

For meals look at toptable which has tons of offers by cuisine/area:

For drinks you could try the Heights on the 15th floor of the St George's hotel, near the BBC, just north of Oxford Circus or Harvey Nicks fifth floor bar just across Hyde Park at Knightsbridge, but unless you can find somewhere with a happy hour you won't get much change from £20 for a couple of cocktails.

We were planning on eating near Paddignton on arrival on Burget king or Pret or something , then go for a drink somewhere special. Can't we just get a drink somewhere?
