Where to base trip in UK

We're planning a trip to UK in October or possibly August. Don't like crowds so October may be better but concerned with weather. Regardless first time there and not sure which area to base our trip. Would love to see quaint towns, beautiful country sides and castles. Not too interested in the big cities or typical tourist spots. Will be in UK 10 days...any suggestions. Btw... Would love to see Scotland too...oh and on a modest budget. Thanks!!!!!!

August is our school holiday period so places are much busier - and more expensive.

The weather can be nice in October although there are less daylight hours.

It can rain here at any time so you have to take a chance on this one!

If you are planning to fly into London then it is a long trip up to Scotland.

This is very general and hard for people to give too specific suggestions without knowing what your interests really are. Also you may consider reposting in the general UK forum rather than the London one as you have said you aren't interested in big cities and London is the biggest in the UK.

Have you arranged your journey to the UK yet - where are you arriving if so? How do you plan on traveling around? Will you hire a car for all or part of the journey or are you reliant on public transport? How many in your party? What is your definition of a modest budget?

BTW, if traveling to the UK it's best not to place too much emphasis on your expectations of the weather. It could quite easily be nicer in October than August. Plan for all seasons, there's a possibility they could all occur on the same day.

October is often a lovely month and much less busy than August'. I'ld suggest you look at the South Downs National Park and the places around it. Easy to get to from London, beautiful countryside and lots of lovely places to visit. Arundel is a big village by a river with old houses and a large castle. Lewes is a biggish town also on a river with lots of old houses,a ruined Norman castle, Ann of Cleves house (one if Henry VIII's wives who didn't get her head chopped off) and much more. Brighton, Chichester and Portsmouth are not far away,
