Windsor Castle questions from a first time visitor...

Trying to decide between public transport or coach tour from London to Windsor Castle. Will be between Dec. 27 - Jan 3 so probably pretty chilly weather. 2 Adults and 2 older children (18 and 21). If we take a train(?) to Windsor how far is it to the castle? Walking distance in the winter? Staying at Hilton on Park Lane if that makes any difference. Leaning away from one of the tours that has three stops like Castle, Stonehenge and Bath, seems like a lot of time of the bus and not enough at any one stop.

Any tips or advice appreciated. Thanks.

The castle is walking distance from both of Windsor's train stations (Central and Riverside). My parents did the bus tour years ago when I lived in London, and came back afterwards complaining that the tour simply dropped people off at the train station and left passengers to their own devices afterwards. If you take the train you can spend as long as you want in Windsor, and not have to leave when the bus leaves.

I would get the train.

If the weather is unpleasant you can always get a taxi from the station to the castle entrance.

The distance from either station to the castle is so short, that I would be surprised if a taxi would accept the fare.

Maybe you could persuade the taxi driver to take a scenic bypass to make it worth his while?

Though the hypothesis that there is driving sleet etc means that it would be hard to see the scenery.

Here's a very useful traveller article on getting to Windsor -

As you're visiting between Christmas and New Year, make sure to check for engineering works on the railway lines over that period. They often do take the opportunity of the holiday period to carry out track maintenance. There's no indication yet as to whether either of the routes will be affected.

wow, thanks for the links and advice all : )

hopefully we can have enough flexibility to go on a decent day (no sleet).

my thought is better to pick one excursion and do it well rather than "hit and run" at three places. Would like to tour and have a meal in Windsor, maybe a little shopping.

You have got the right idea.

You never know about the weather--it can be cold, or blessedly sunny, or rainy--and that's just 15 minutes.

The distance from the coach park (if taking a bus tour ) and the train station are almost exactly the same. You have to walk through the train staion after getting off a coach.

The castle is right there in the middle of the town across form the train station.

That is if you get the train from Paddinggtomn (a very easy and quick change at Slough) and don't go into Windsor & Eton Riverside. Even if you did - the walk would be increased by less than 5 nminutes.

Two more really helpful links and more practical advice... many thanks! It can be challenging to wade through all the guidebooks and online info so this is much better! I think we will skip the coach tour and do our own.
