Prob silly, are single trips same price with/without oyster?

Hi all,

It looks like we will now be getting a 7 day travel card and I will book a car transfer from airport to apartment and dd's will take Stansted bus so won,t be getting an Oyster card

But

For the trip to Harry potter is it cheaper to pay with an oyster or same price as just buying a return ticket?

It's the only trip we will take out of zones 1/2

Probably silly question but you never know unless you ask my mother always said!

Your TCs will take you to the edge of Zone 2, so you only need to pay from Zone 3 to Watford. You can buy an add on ticket before you start your journey so you don't have to get off in the middle.

The cash fare is £5.50. The Oyster fare is £1.60, however, as you will have paper TCs you will need to get off at Willesden Junction pass though the gates with you TC and then touch back in with your Oyster (there may be touch pads on the platform so you can jump off and back on the same train)

Are you going to buy the seven day travelcard loaded on Oyster or as a paper ticket? It affects the answer.

No. Oyster fares are cheaper than paper tickets, and in the case of the tube (usually) substantially cheaper.

However, for the trip to Watford Junction by National Rail (not London Overground), the fare difference isn't bad, assuming you travel off peak. From zone 1, Oyster costs £4.50 each way (so £9 return), while the paper return rail ticket from Euston costs £9.80. And, if you show your seven day travelcard to the ticket clerk, you may get a small discount off your rail ticket as they may be able to price it from the zone 2 boundary.

National Rail Oyster fares to Watford Jct are shown here - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14414.aspx
