Car rental on outskirts of London

Hi there - We are staying in London for several days and then wish to rent a car as we head south or southwest out of London. Where would be the most convenient location to rent from? We would be using public transportation to reach the car rental office. Many thanks!

If South, Gatwick. If Southwest, Heathrow.

Are you heading for anywhere in particular? It might be easier to travel by train and hire a car closer to your destination

Depends where you're staying and where you're heading to.

Trains from London to Portsmouth depart from Waterloo and Victoria, and arrive in Portsmouth 1 1/2 to 2 hours later.

An advance ticket from Victoria can be purchased for as little as £10.

If you were looking into making a road trip to see other things along the way, perhaps investigate hiring a car. If you are just heading for Portsmouth, I would take the train. Another option, train there, and rent a car for meandering back, to drop at whichever airport you depart from.
