Christmas in London with children

Hello! We will be in London Dec. 23 - 29. Any suggestions on hotels will be most welcome. Any experience with booking "quad" rooms vs. two adjoining rooms? The children are 8 and 10, so having twin beds for them would be a plus. I'd like to keep the cost at $300 - $350/night (less would be nice but thinking that we'll want to be centrally located). Thank you!

You will want to book something central. Are you aware that a large number of London attractions are closed the 24-26? And there will be no public transportation (at all) on the 25th. Have you booked your plane tickets yet? I love London, but would not pick Christmas as a time to go, especially for a first trip. I looked at it with my daughter (who has been to London multiple times) last year (I think) and she decided too much was closed for it to be worth it.

BTW, $300-350 converts to £197-230. Use www.xe.com for conversions. It's helpful to post in the local currency as that's how the hotels are priced. I might try the Premier Inn County Hall which has family rooms. There's also PI Waterloo (which is newer) and Leicester Square. I've never stayed in them, and if you want to book you'll have to either book by phone or get them to add you to their system as otherwise they won't take a US credit card. You can book a non prepaid rate online but those are not the cheapest.

I don't know if you are aware, but there is no public transportation on Christmas Day in London. So you will have to self cater your Christmas meal or be in a location which is walkable to a restaurant (of course, your hotel restaurant will be an option).

Here is last year's list of restaurants that were open on Christmas Day (it will require updating closer to Christmas 2013): https:/…edit

For hotel options, it is probably best to start with a booking engine such as:

http://www.booking.com/ or http://www.hotels.com/

You may want to consider the Premier Inn chain of hotels in London which have family rooms. The County Hall and Waterloo (Westminster Bridge) locations are centrally located (though there are several other Premier Inns in central London as well) http://www.premierinn.com/

For hotels with connecting rooms, see this list: https:/…edit

If you are interested in flat rental options, see this list: https:/…edit

Here are some specific flats that appear to be available for your dates:

I don't think TexScott linked to his budget hotels list. It does include some hotels with quad rooms. I haven't looked at their locations though.

Thanks btgm, I did forget.

Didn't mean to copycat your original post, but by the time I had mine all typed out - you had posted.

Hi TexScott - that's what I figured. It's all those links you put in, takes longer than just typing. At least we aren't contradicting each other!

Thank you both for all of the terrific info!

We've already book our flights. We'll be in Paris Dec. 15 - 23, planning on London 23rd - 29th and then Dublin 29th - Jan 2nd. Given it's such a long trip having bit of quiet time in London will be nice.

I'll start checking on your links. And I'm sure that I'll be back :)

Hello, I'm a Londoner so not sure about hotels but I would strongly reccomend looking into renting someone's apartment for the time you are there as a lot of people will be gone for the holidays. This will be a much cheaper option than staying in a hotel, I should think the prices will be huge at Xmas. If you can stay in central London you will find some pubs open on Christmas day but if you want to book Xmas dinner you'll need to book. Have a walk around the city, I've done it before and it's a great way to enjoy London when no one else is there, totally unique

Probably a bit of a random suggestion, but be sure to book tickets to see a pantomine, your kids will love it. Go on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day if possible - very festive and very British.

Hi All,planning to spend Xmas and new year with the kids (under 3yrs) in London. Pls suggest good itinerary for days out with the kids. Aswell as a good restaurant for Xmas eve dinner perhaps with a show/live performance or singing (hubby and me), as well as New Year's Eve dinner with views of the fireworks..looking for good food and vibe. Thanks
