Brighton - the classic "London-on-Sea" can take train there. Beach pebbley though

Essex Sunshine Coast - Train from Liverpool Street - all nice sandy beaches at Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze or Frinton-on-Sea.

There isn't a beach near London. You can take a train to Southend or Brighton maybe , both mainly stony beaches though and both about a one hour train journey from central London. The nearest sandy beach is probably Margate or Clacton

Southend-on-Sea is not stoney, but it is more muddy than sandy. Southend does have the distinction of having the longest Pleasure Pier in the world (Walton-on-the-Naze has the second longest....)

There are dozens of locations around London. Perhaps say a little more about what kind of beach you want to visit?

Or go to one of the bathing ponds on Hampstead Heath:

I understood Bournemouth to be really nice? Is this too far from London? We are always told it is worth a day trip when we go over to London

Bournemouth is nice, it used to have a reputation as being a resort for older people, but when I was there this week there were young(ish) people on the beach and a fair number kayaking and swimming ( mostly in wetsuits) . Not as interesting or lively as Brighton but nicer beaches.

A little under two hours on the train.

Bournemouth is very nice and if a beautiful golden sandy beach is what you are looking for, it's just the ticket. But further away. Nearly 2 hours by train from Waterloo. Can be very lively with stag and hen parties in the evening though (this applies to very many British seaside resorts).

Brighton is a nice beach town and easy to get to by train.

If you've got access to a car, West Wittering is a proper sandy beach within easy reach of London, and not too over-commercialised.
