Give me a Gut Check on Notting Hill/West London

I love London and visit once every month or two for work--usually hectic weeks/long nights at work. This time, my husband and I are visitng for leisure and are looking to spend a weekend in London living like locals to the greatest extent possible (i.e., looking to avoid tourist hordes/the uber-commercial). We have our reasons, living in a city presently swarmed with tourists, to start.

Thinking of spending one day walking/shopping/lunching in a neighborhood relatively west of Central London (because it's an area with which I am not familiar). Was thinking Notting Hill. Can you advise re: whether I have the right idea? Looking for boutique shops (looking for a good concentration), pretty streets, serenity, and gourmet food (also looking for a concentration of restaurants for options). I'm thinking SoHo in New York if anyone is familiar, but more.... British.... and Posh.

Would it be worth spending a day in Notting Hill. And if so, do I have the right idea? And if not, would you recommend another area outside of prime, central London? We are looking to spend a similar day in Soho (London) by the way.

Thanks very much, in advance. Looking foward to the advice.

You sound like you want Hampstead (Heath / village).

Have a look at La Gaffe hotel & Restaurant on google map.

Notting Hill is certainly an option especially if you are interested in the Portobello antiques market although it gets rammed on a Saturday morning.

This might help a little - http://www.thehill.co.uk/

Borough (food) Market might be of more interest from a food point of view (although again serenity isn't a word one would associate with the market) and I would also consider Hampstead where walks on the beautiful Heath are a must on a fine day.

I'd agree with Hampstead, and also suggest Richmond. It also has lots of lovely lanes with specialist shops, plus the bonus of a riverside setting and a wonderful deer park up the hill. Views that Turner painted are still there.

If it's ok for Mick Jagger.......

I'm biased (because I live there), but Chiswick is a possibility. A good selection of small independent shops (on Turnham Green Terrace and Devonshire Road), lots of restaurants, the River Thames half a mile away, Chiswick House and Gardens for serenity. Tube (District Line) to Turnham Green.

Notting Hill has some great restaurants, boutiques and interesting shops but it is very touristy but still has an edgy local vibe. Definitely worth a visit but don't think it's what you're after.

As one of the other posters suggested Richmond has a good selection of what you are looking for

Sorry - didn't edit properly! Belsize Park is more NW than W London but otherwise a good choice I think.
