depends entirely on the hotel's cancellation policy. It could be that you lose all your money if it was a non refundable booking

Yes, depends on the hotels policy.

Special online offers are sometimes non refundable, likewise small private places as opposed to chains, but this will be noted when you book. Otherwise, for standard hotels booked online look at your booking details. You may need to give 24 or 48 hours notice and in this case should be able to do it via the booking website.

You need to contact your hotel to get this info or check out your confirmation it should have the cancellation policy on it.
