Travel from Heathrow to Gatwick Airports

We arrive in Heathrow at 9am and have a 6:35pm flight out of Gatwick. What is the best way to travel to Gatwick? Would also like to see a site or two in London. Is the Hop-On Hop-Off Boat a good way to see some sites?

The best way to see the sight in a limited time like that is probably the Gray Line 3 hours bus tour of London with London Eye ticket. Just get the tube into London from Heathrow, and a southern train from Victoria to Gatwick.

Caution. Whilst you can certainly see a bit of London (and travelling via London is actually cheaper than the direct coach) you have less sightseeing time than you may think.

If you land at 0900, expect to have collected your bags and be through immigration by 1000. The tube from LHR to Victoria will be just under an hour. Then, assuming you do have bags, you need to put your bags into left luggage at Victoria station. So it's now about 1130.

At the other end, for a flight at 1830 the check in will close about 1745, but you really want to have contingency time. If it was me I would want to be at LGW between 1600 and 1630, which means catching a train no later than 1545. So.... Only about four hours sightseeing time. I'd be cautious about a three hour bus tour - what if you get stuck in traffic at the other end of the city? I'd suggest walking from Victoria station - many major sights such as Buckingham Palace are just minutes away

Tickets: at Heathrow buy one day travelcard, £8.90 per adult.

At Victoria (National Rail ticket office), show your travelcard and ask for a "boundary zone 6 to Gatwick" ticket. That will cost about £5 per adult.

Are the lockers at Victoria Station large enough for 2 carry-on luggage bags and a day pack? Or would we be better off taking a coach right to Gatwick and checking in our luggage, then taking the train back into the city for a couple of hours?

There are no lockers at any of the Victoria stations - there are left luggage offices which have more than enough space for luggage. You can save money by carrying a spare large bag and putting your other bags in it as they charge per bag

Why would you check-in your hand luggage?

Why would you check-in your hand luggage?

=======

Because its stuff you need on a plane or wish to make sure is at your end destination but you don't need when touring London ?
