Chelsea Cloisters...prostitutes??

I've been hunting for a place to rent for a 3 week stay in London next summer (far ahead of time to be looking, I know) and I found a seemingly perfect place for me in Chelsea Cloisters. It's a great location in the city, seems to be a safe area for a solo female traveller, and the apartment is exactly what I'm looking for - AND exactly at my budget (~$2000 USD).

The only downside I see is that it's on the ground floor. The window has curtains, though, and only has smaller windows that open (i.e. a human could not get through them), so it doesnt bother me much (bothers my mother a lot...).

However, now I heard something about CC being a "haven for prostitutes." The only article I found was from 2004 and the last forum post I saw on here referring to it was from 2006, and a commenter said they had thought the owner was cleaning that up and ending that nonsense (tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186338-i17-k44473…). Has anyone heard about this or know anything about this building that I should know about?

I'm only going to be there for 3 weeks, it's not the rest of my life, but would also like to avoid a bad situation if this is all true... Thanks, all!!

CC does have prostitutes, not sure if they do their business in there but i know many of them hang out in a few of the apartments and wait for calls to hotels etc.

I hope the £2,000 (under £1300) is a price per week. If it is the price for the whole 3 weeks, you may have much more serious problems than a few ladies of the night.

This website says the rate for a studio flat for 3 weeks is £605 pw ($2,807 total for 3 weeks)

http://www.chelseacloisters.co.uk/rates

and even that seems low for a central London flat.

It could all be ok, but you might want to run your source through this forum if you haven't already.

It is said that the area can be frequented by high-class hookers, depends how happy you are with that, personally I would not like it very much at all but some may well come on here and argue that I am just an old fuddy duddy and that there is nothing wrong with renting a place in such an area.

So, only you can decide, I can only tell you what I have heard, which could be exaggerated or simply not the case anymore, will leave it up to other members to give their opinions, mine are generally ignored or shot down in flames anyway.

btw all the best.

Flats rented directly from CC get very mixed reviews. However there are some studios that are rented by the owners which get good reviews (but the price is going to be £525+ per week). The price you quoted in your post is about £425/week. Where did you get that price?

For the studios for rent by owner, see the last page of this list: https:/…edit

Leagle, I am not renting through Chelsea Cloisters. It's a privately-owned flat through Airbnb. And 2000 USD not GBP. Why do you think that price is a serious problem - it's so low? The landlord has many great reviews, many have stayed in the flat, and I am pretty sure Airbnb is a reliable site??

Have you checked reviews? Might be worth PM's a few reviewers to see what they say:

tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186338-d6082…

I've no idea if there's 'escort' trade currently there. Sloane Ave is very upmarket so the area's not a problem. Used to be the Mandarin Oriental and Harvey Nicks fifth floor where they used to hang out though an apartment block makes sense It would be worth looking elsewhere probably. That rate sounds on the low side although poor condition of the property - and it sounds as if maintenance might be more of an issue - might explain it.

Airbnb is legit but does not seem to have (unless things have changed)l, good vetting procedures for its properties so you could end up in an illegally sublet apartment. Or with a psycho. Though they do have a phone number to ring if you think you might have a problem in this regard. Which is nice. You might be fine though, trouble is you won't know till you're at the property.

And yes $2000 for 3 weeks is low esp for that area. Do you have a link to the property?
