Camden, or Islington?

Hampstead?

But why don't you want to stay IN London?

Are you travelling down from Liverpool?

If so there are cheap advance tickets available from Lime Street to London Euston for as little as £12.50 for when you want to travel.

I'd stay in London itself for the reasons outlined by the previous posters.

If you are worried about expensive hotels try looking at Premier Inns in London, most are in a really good location and are not as expensive as you would think, travelling into London every day takes money and time.

There's a Premier Inn out towards Shepherds Bush, Ealing way (forgot the exact location) that friends of mine were looking at. As monroeessex says, they aren't too expensive and aren't too far from central London.

You could try the Travel-lodge in Stratford travelodge.co.uk/hotels/522/London-Stratford…

click on 'lowest prices' and it will show you what's available.

From Stratford you can easily use the train into London Liverpool street or the tube/DLR tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/…1000226.aspx

For those who want o save money/stay outside the noise and dirt of London, a good place might be the Premier Inn Chingford Royal Forest Hotel - gets excellent reviews, on the very edge of the country, 5 to 10 min walk Chingford Station (zone 5; 30 min to the city or 35 West End. Camden Rd - change at Hackney Downs and walk to Hackney Central (counted as single journey on Oyster)

The "dirt of London"?

That can be found at the House of Commons! ;-p

The rest of London I find to be very clean.

Have a look at the Hide London. 5 minutes from Hendon tube, direct access no changes via Northern line to central London in 20-30 minutes.

Usually about £100/night. There is also a Travelodge Cricklewood and the PI Belsize Park.
