First time in London

We will be going to London this summer for 6 days and need suggestions on where to stay. I have problems walking long distances, so proximity to public transport is very important. What are some places we should not miss? Should we go to Paris for a night or two?

You may use www.xe.com to calculate exchange rate for hotels and transport costs.

As henneth said, transport is plentiful in central London. If stairs will be problematic for you then you may find buses and other modes of transport easier to use than the Underground, but that can be sorted later.

www.eurostar.com for more information on the rail journey from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. An overnight stay will allow you to do and see more than on a day trip, so consider what interests *you and your travelling companion* for the visit to both cities.

I'm not sure what is going on with this thread. But I'll just comment on the Paris idea. You are coming to London and have 6 days. Is that 6 full days, not counting your travel in and travel home? If the 6 days includes your travel days, I would advise you to skip Paris. That's a lot of traveling and will feel very rushed. London is such an extravaganza, with so much beauty and so many incredible sights, why not get to know it better?

About the walking, do be sure to get a detailed map of London -- one you probably need to purchase. I forgot to do this on our recent trip and was still using the map that came in my Frommer's or whatever. So things look much closer than they really are because the smaller streets are not shown -- and that can also be confusing. So do get a realistic idea of where you will be walking. I really like the DK Eyewitness London book for ideas about particular walks in particular neighborhoods -- they have very detailed maps and you can adapt as you wish. Also know that some of the Tube stations are huge inside. I'm not sure what other advice to give, but perhaps the bus idea is a good one.

You might want to skip certain museums as they can involve a lot of walking -- just an idea.

As to planning, do two things: (1) look at this forum and read a number of the trip reports people have posted, and (2) get at least one guidebook so you can browse through it.

A budget would help.
