OK, if the person in question is seven then that makes it easier, as he is obviously going to be smaller than an adult and the wheelchair will also be smaller than an adult-sized wheelchair. I only have experience doing this with an adult. With a child it may well be perfectly possible.

As for a people carrier, I was thinking of something like this: http://www.motability.co.uk/cs/groups/public/documents/digitalmedia/bw9f/mdq0/~edisp/mo_044772.jpg, which I was guessing could be arranged through some minicab firms that have specialised vehicles in their fleet.

Wheelchair users travel free on London buses. No need for a pass or anything.

There's a special wheelchair bell next to the middle doors that a wheelchair user (or companion) can ring to alert the driver a wheelchair user wishes to board.

Yep, forgot about that, just thinking for other parts of the uk - I was only thinking it sometimes helps to know about getting one for other parts of the uk as they are normally needed.

The procedure for wheelchairs on buses is

Open exit doors and let those off who want to get off.

Close doors and extend ramp

open door for wheelchair

open front doors for other passengers to board

Wheelchairs take precedence over pushchairs so you may have to wait it the driver thinks there are too many for them to get off. Never actually seen a driver kick off a parent with pushchair, but there are posters going up this week reminding passengers

Neither have I, but I have been on buses where the driver has given passengers the option of folding their buggies or getting off.
