What's your idea for a experience present for a 21 year old?

Hello, our daughter is going to arrive in London 2 weeks before her 21st birthday. She loves art, history, and traveling, and plans to be there a full semester. this will be her second trip there...she didn't leave London much last time as there were so many amazing things to do, but this time she plans to do some day trips to other countries. She isn't a big drinker ....what would the locals suggest??? I would love to buy her a gift certificate or pass or ticket before she leaves....ideas?

Theatre tickets, for sure. There are so many great plays too, not only musical. The offer is abundant and you can get lost trying to find "the right thing". Maybe she is the kind of girl who likes Jude Law? He's on stage in London this winter.

Do you mean other countries within the UK? If not get her on Eurostar to Paris or Brussels or both.

Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona for the Prado, Jean Miro, Picasso, Dali, Gaudi and both distant and recent history.

Ask her course tutor if there is anywhere she would benefit from experiencing, rather than reading about.

Europe (including Britain) has lots of art and history. Lots.

Which other countries were you thinking about? Within the U.K. Europe? Not that easy to do day trips outside the U.K. Possible if you are thinking about Paris for instance. Not really recommended.

<< Day trips to other countries>>

Do you mean Scotland Wales and Ireland?

Or do you mean crossing the channel to France, Belgium, Germany, etc.?

Or perhaps you have misunderstood your daughter and she means other COUNTIES apart from London (which is not really a county, but still ...) such as Suffolk, Berkshire, Yorkshire etc.?

If it's a day trip she's planning the only other country that would be possible would be France so you could buy her a ticket on the eurostar to Paris.

Long time since I was twenty one. But I did enjoy Paris at that age and Brussels is most underrated.

Further to post #4: in fact, 'Greater London (excluding the City of London)' is defined as a county of England in the Lieutenancies Act 1997 (www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1997/23/contents), and the City of London is also regarded as a county for certain purposes of the Act.

In general, day trips to other countries are probably just about possible, but probably not worthwhile. For example, it would be possible to fly out of Heathrow at 6 a.m. and be at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna for opening time of 10 a.m. and to take a taxi back to the airport around 5.30 p.m. in order to fly home at 8 p.m. It is very unlikely, however, that anyone would do this. Long weekend trips, on the other hand, would be a good idea.

If she wants to see art in London (and the rest of the UK) a very good option is the Art Fund card (artfund.org/get-involved/buy-a-national-art-…), which gives substantial discounts on admission to many exhibitions and free entry to many museums etc. It may be worthwhile to check, however, whether this represents good value for money if she also has a student ID, which will get her discounts at a lot of places anyway.

You could also consider a membership at somewhere like the Royal Academy, but if she is only here for a semester (or possibly in fact a UK "term", which is shorter than a US semester) she may not get enough use out of it to make a one-year membership worthwhile.

In fact, this will be a problem with a lot of these types of passes, memberships, etc, is that often they only pay for themselves over the duration of a whole year.

Theatre tokens are a good idea.

I spent a semester in London when I was 19. I had a blast on a mid term trip to Prague, and went to Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris, Brussels & Brugge at various points during my 3 month stay.

There is so much to see all over Europe and London is a great jumping-off point. A Eurostar ticket for a weekend in Belgium would be an amazing gift.

You may also want to look into a Eurail Pass (especially since it cannot be purchased from Europe).

There is so much art and history in Europe that it would be difficult to choose. Day trips is another matter though she has acess the main airports and I have seen trip reports on here where someone has done a city in a day by leaving early and getting back late.

It would be worth asking on the Train Travel forum about passes. Maybe the Bargain Travel too for ideas.

There is also some wonderful info on the website 'Man in Seat 61' which she could use.

In the UK Edinburgh has lots of art galleries with some major works, wonderful accessible history. Easy to do cheaply with a flight on EasyJet and night in Travellodge.

Barcelona covers her interests, Madrid and the Prado but more than a day trip Florence would be amazing. The Ufitzi Gallery has a massive collection of the major works of art and you are surrounded by buildings and sculpture that are both historical and works of art.
