Where should we stay in London?

Greetings:

My wife and I will be spending two nights in London in very early June next year on our way back to Canada. We had planned to stay at an old but nice hotel like the Olympia Hotel (Earl’s Court) or the Ridgemount Hotel (65-67 Gower Street) but a friend has advised us to stay at some kind of huge tourist hotel because most of them provide free shuttle service to Heathrow Airport. He has warned us that taxis in London cost, according to him, “an arm and a leg.” He has told us that if we stay at a hotel without this shuttle service, the taxi trip from our hotel to Heathrow could cost the equivalent of a night’s accommodation at our hotel (depending on the cost of the hotel, of course). Frankly, we don’t know what to do. We wanted to stay at a place with history and character, but not if this history and character cost a fair bit of money. Please note that we are on an extremely tight budget. Any advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Stay in the hotel you want to stay in and then you have 3 options for travel.

1) pre-book a car. This will reduce the cost and you will be able to check out the price in advance

2) get the heathrow express from Paddington. If your hotel isn't near Paddington get a taxi there which shouldn't cost much. Also think about luggage.

3) get the tube. This is the least expensive option but you will really have to consider if you feel comfortable doing this if you have LOTS of luggage. A couple of cases, not at rush hour - fine.

It is not always the case in London that big tourist hotels are soulless but actually many can be beautiful. For example http://www.hotelgainsborough.co.uk

Your friend's advice is not very helpful. He is right about the costs of black cabs between central London and Heathrow, but wrong about the alternatives.

If you take the Piccadilly line tube from central London to Heathrow (or Heathrow to central London) it will costs around £6 for each person each way in 2014. If you have a zone 1 & 2 travel card, adding the zones from Heathrow will costs even less.

Unless you have huge bags or need to be at Heathrow very early in the morning or very late at night you would be fine. The trip takes and the tube goes to all the terminals in roughly an hour. Transport by road won't take much less.

If you need to take a car, a pre-booked mini cab is closer to £30-£40 for the car but on a tight budget, if there are fewer than 5 of you, the tube is the way to go.

Others can advise you about hotels with character.

You may also want to look into the 2 for 1 deals which will get you into some of the more expensive sights at a significant discount. (And the main exhibits at most of our museums are free)

The Picadilly Line of the London Underground (aka "The Tube) goes to Heathrow, and costs little!

Public transport in London is excellent, you do not HAVE to use taxis or car service.....

And the Heathrow Express is both idiotically expensive and, unless you are staying right by Paddington (which is not advised). it is no faster than the underground.

Two tickets on the Heathrow Express plus a taxi to your hotel would probably come to more than a pre-booked car.

The Olympia Hotel (Hotel Olympia) is a 2 minute walk from Earl's Court Station, and then it's straight to Heathrow on the Piccadilly Line, and should take around 40 minutes.

I have never heard of a hotel offering free transfers to Heathrow, I'm not saying they don't exist but you should ask your friend the name of the hotel that provides them.

Most of the "huge tourist hotel" (whatever that means) have free shuttle service to and from Heathrow Airport?

That's news to me!

I'd tell you what I think of your friend's advice but TripAdvisor doesn't allow profanities.

If you are on a tight budget, using the tube and buses for getting around London makes sense.

with only 2 days, it is unlikely to make sense to travel outside of London.
