What happens if I accidentally exceeded my zone on the tube?

Hi!

I will purchase a zone 1 & 2 Travelcard when I'm in London next week. However, I am wondering what would happen if I accidentally trespass into zone 3 and exiting at that station? Can I pay for the additional fare or I'll be fined straight off?

Thanks,

Mel

If you did it accidentally surely the logical thing to do would be to just hop on a train going back to the station you meant to get off at, rather than exiting the station you didn't mean to go to?

Fortunately it's really easy to not miss your stop on the underground.

Where do you plan on going that may cause you to accidentally trespass into zone 3?

I can think of a few, though aside from east of Greenwich and Stratford, most would involve going to football matches/grounds.

If you're planning on going to a z3 location, especially if it's more than once, then a seven day zones 1-3 travelcard is only £5.20 more than the z1-2 (at 2013 prices).

If your travelcard is loaded onto an Oyster Card and and you also have some pay-as-you-go money on it, any excess fare due is deducted automatically when you pass through the barrier at the end of your journey.

I was just thinking Oyster would be a far better deal for you to get travelcard loaded onto that, to avoid problems like this.

Unless you are buying a paper Travelcard at a National rail station to get the 2for1 offers, when you buy the 7 day card on oyster, ask the ticket clerk to load say £5 or £10 of PAYG as well. You can claim unspent credit and the oyster deposit at the end of your stay.

I have seen hapless tourists fined, but that's mostly when a posse of revenue protection officers are saturating a station (eg Stratford). If you did it accidentally, otherwise, you might well be let off. BUT, it isn't worth the hassle, so just put a few pounds extra on PAYG.

I hadn't even thought of the possibility!

Is there a list somewhere of sites and what zones they fall into?

The barrier won't open, they'll be a loud beeping noise along with a 'seek assistance' message flashed up. Then one of station staff will come to help you. Then they'll either let you through or fine you.

<<Is there a list somewhere of sites and what zones they fall into?>>

Yes, clearly marked on the Underground map.

tfl.gov.uk/assets/…standard-tube-map.pdf

The zones are shaded grey and white in the background. As an example, in the top right-hand corner on the Central Line (red), Buckhurst Hill is in Zone 5, Woodford is in Zone 4. A few stations further on, Leytonstone is in both zones 3 and 4.

If you scroll down on that site you'll see an index to the stations stating which zone each station is in.

This is the same as the free map that's available at all Underground (tube) stations.
