travel advice

We will have a hire car to drop off in Oxford. We will have picked the car up at Manchester Airport. No idea what drop off fees might be entailed here? Any suggestions for the best hire company to use with this in mind? We need to go to Paris from Oxford, travelling on a Sunday. Do we take a train to London and go on Eurostar to Paris? Do we take a coach or a taxi to either Luton or Heathrow and fly to Paris, (must be Charles D.G.), the flight would have to be early afternoon? It seems that flights are expensive from Heathrow, not so much from Luton (Easy Jet springs to mind). We have lots of time to organize this, the travel is not happening until July, but not sure if it's better to book well in advance or risk a last minute deal??

The options are confusing... any help gratefully accepted.

You might consider dropping the car off at Heathrow and either flying out from there, or taking the tube into London and taking the Eurostar to Paris. You would need to buy Eurostar tickets well in advance to make it worthwhile-walk up fares will be high. Tickets are released 120 days out.

Actually, though, you might consider dropping the car off in Oxford Saturday, as the car rental places should be open (half day, at least). You can travel by bus or train to London, and then take the Eurostar. Oxford is not really a place where you need a car, if you are there to explore the city.

You can get quotes online from the major car hire companies to see how much extra it costs. This is not necessarily indicative but hiring a car at Gatwick and dropping at Heathrow was £50 more in one test I did. Note that some of the major companies sub-contract to local firms (particularly away from major locations) and do not offer returning to anywhere that isn't the origin

Missed edit time! A test with Hertz on Manchester -> Oxford also came up £50 more expensive. Also there's time restrictions on returning cars in Oxford and I'd imagine most places outside of London airports

Oxford is a place you definitely DON'T want a car!

I'd be tempted to drop the car at Luton airport and take Easyjet to CDG.

Just be careful of their baggage charges.
