London to Southanpton

Trying to decide best way to go from Central London to Southampton. Am staying near the Blackfriars Tube Station. We will be traveling with 2 carry on bags. From what I see the 2 options are;

1. Take the tube from Blackfriars to Westminster then on to Waterloo. Then take the National Rail to Southampton Rail Station.

2. Take the tube from Blackfriars to Victoria. Then take National Express Bus to Southampton Bus Station.

How much is a taxi to Victoria or Waterloo

Is the Waterloo tube station in the same place as the National Rail station

Is the Victoria tube station near the Victoria bus station

In Southampton is the rail station & the bus station in the same area. Need to take a taxi to the cruise ship dock.

Waterloo rail and tube stations are in the same place. Victoria Coach station is about 10 minutes walk from the tube station. Pass on taxi prices

If you go by train you want Southampton Central station,

Megatrain may offer you a cheaper ride from Waterloo to Southampton than National Rail - same trains, just advance booking for specific times if they suit when you want to travel Bookings normally no more than 6 weeks ahead

SouthWest trains operates the trains from Waterloo to Southampton. Depending on the time and day they run 3 trains an hour - 2 fast and 1 slower (which I believe is the one Megatrains sell tickets for).

You can get a train from Victoria to Clapham Junction where you change for the SWT train to Southampton. Check the SWT website for details.

National Express coach station and Southampton Central train station are right by each other with a large branch of Toys R Us between them. If there are no taxis at the coach station, just walk round the other side of this shop and you will see the very large taxi rank at the train station.

There's no sense in doing that if they are starting from Blackfriars

I would take a taxi to Waterloo and the train direct from there.

You may be able to get unbelievably (but genuine) cheap train tickets from Waterloo to Southampton using the Megatrain site, which would wipe out the taxi fare and some more.

If you only have carry-on bags, you could walk from Blackfriars to Waterloo.

If you walk up to Fleet Street or Ludgate Hill you can catch buses 4, 26, 76 and 172 to Waterloo Station.

Megatrain has only 1 car I believe. If I wait till those tickets are available (1 month in advance) what are the odds they will be sold out?

It doesn't have only one car - that system ceased some time back

If you buy at the 6 week point it's very unlikely to be sold out

There are to take a random example seats available next Wednesday on many departures

And you haven't actually lost anything if you don't get one - you'll be paying the 'normal' price for the train you travel on

The coach station and Southampton Central railway station are both quite close to the docks.
