17 Day Trip to London/Edinburgh/Dublin HELP

My husband (38 y/o) and I (32 y/o) will be traveling to London, Edinburgh and Dublin for 17 days in the last week of March through early April. In London, we will be staying with family members in Gillingham Kent so we will be taking the train back and forth to London and driving to Bath and Stonehenge. In Edinburgh, we will be staying at Jury's Inn next to Waverly Train station and in Dublin, we will be staying at Blooms Hotel in the Temple Bar area. We will not have a car in Dublin.

We are also thinking of doing a day trip to Brussels from London. We are not sure if this is worth a day trip OR save it for another European vacation.

We need your help and suggestions with our itinerary. Many many thanks! :)

Here's what our itinerary looks like:

Day 1: Flight from US to London - Arrive London

Day 2: Arrive London - get settled and rest due to jet lag

Day 3: Bath and Stonehenge

Day 4: London

Day 5: Windsor

Day 6: London

Day 7: Edinburgh

Day 8: Edinburgh and the countryside (Stirling Castle and Whiskey Tour)

Day 9: Flight back to London early @ 6:00AM; for the rest of the day, just hang out in London

Day 10: Cambridge

Day 11: Day Trip to Brussels

Day 12: Flight to Dublin from London early @ 8:00am/ hang out in Dublin for the rest of the day

Day 13: Dublin

Day 14: Day Trip to Galway from Dublin

Day 15: Day Trip to Belfast from Dublin

Day 16: Glendadlough/Mt. Wicklow

Day 17: Flight from Dublin back to US (early 6am flight)

Any suggestions/comments/ideas is appreciated. Thank you so much!

Some random thoughts:

Gillingham is by no means London, it's an hours train ride away.

It's also on the wrong side of London for all the places you want to go. Stonehenge is going to be about a 3 hours drive, then it's another hour from there to Bath and probably 3.5 - 4 hours back to Gillingham. It's not a particularly nice drive, involving lots of very busy motorway, and you'll be hard pressed to avoid hitting rush hour somewhere at some point. 7-8 hours in the car also doesn't leave a lot of time for actually getting out and seeing stuff (and Bath is not a great city for driving into and parking in either).

Windsor is a nice easy day trip from London, but from Gillingham it's over two hours each way on the train with at least two changes.

Slightly confused as to why you're going to Edinburgh and then returning to London, which seems unnecessary to and fro (and is this 'return to London' or return to Gillingham?) And more confused why you would want to fly back to London. Then you want to go Cambridge the next day which is a couple of hours again back the way you came! If for some reason you do need to be back in London/Gillingham for those date, then taking the train would almost certainly be easier and quicker than flying. And taking the overnight sleeper train a better alternative than getting up at 0300 for a 6am flight. But, otherwise, do everything you want to do in London first, then go to Edinburgh and fly from there to Dublin.

It appears that the arrangements for Edinburgh have already been made.

I don't know what your precise dates are, but the State apartments at Windsor will be closed on the following dates:

7 March 2014

5-11 April 2014

15 April 2014

And Windsor Castle will be closed

8 April 2014

18 April 2014

20 April 2014 (closed until 13:00)

Sundays are poor days to visit Windsor as you would not see the Changing of the Guard, and you would not be able to visit St. George's Chapel, which is really magnificent--more like a cathedral in size, and really beautiful.

I note in another thread that you will meet other friends in London before you go on to Windsor. If there are four of you, you might take advantage of the group save fares, where four can travel for the price of two. Instead of crossing town to travel from Paddington, you might go out of Waterloo.
