What to do during the Tour de France

I recently found out that the TDF will be in London during our trip there. Any ideas for seeing the city when it is more packed than normal? Will it be hard to get around? We are planning on taking a tour around the city the day after the TDF, so I think we will see most of the sites. We are a group of 2 adults, 2 seniors, 4 kids (9-17).

Whilst there may be large crowds lining the roads it won't be horrendous getting around if you're not watching it. Some roads may be closed which will cause bus diversions etc but the tour is coming in from the east of the city ( map: tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/tour-de-france-2… ) and tube/rail stations may be busy after the tour has gone past that section but otherwise I wouldn't expect too much trouble. One of the key things will be crossing roads that are closed (although there may be marshalled sections that you can cross before/after the peloton has gone through) and avoiding the Mall/Palace/Westminster areas which is the final section

The Tour has been to London before. London is so big, very few events, eg the Olympics, mean that tit comes to a halt. There will be lots of information on how to avoid the crowds.

Although it is on a Monday, it won't disrupt life too much.

I would avoid; Tower Bridge and Tower of London and from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. The only disruption to pedestrians outside these area along the route will be when the caravan passes and then 30 seconds while the peloton passes.

I know that in the past, walks given by London Walks have been disrupted by events like the London Marathon.

Anyone planning a guided walk should check their calendar or e-mail them to make sure there is no conflict with the TDF.

Similar questions have been asked in the past relating to Wimbledon. The answer, as here, is that London is so big and with so many people going about their daily lives normally, that an event such as this has very little overall effect even if there are tens of thousands of extra people watching. It is not like a majot r event happening in one of the smaller cities of the World.

Some roads may be closed and effect trafic, but since the public transport system is so comprehensive the average tourist will see little difference

Most of London didn't notice the Olympics, so the chances of the TdF causing problems outside the route within London are virtually nill.

Going to be totally different in Yorkshire though

Of course the obvious thing to do that day is watch the TdF. It is a unique event and probably one you will never get the chance to see again. A little bit of France in London.

There is more to it than a cycle race. Make sure you don't miss the caravan.
