Gatwick to Doubletree by Hilton Westminster

My daughter and I are visit London for the first time this June. Will be arriving at Gatwick around 11:00 am on a Sunday. Trying to figure out transportation from the airport to the hotel - taxis are extremely expensive! Can anyone suggest an uncomplicated, affordable route by bus or train? We will be very tired and probably kind of cranky from our international flight lol!

Taxi would not only be expensive, but slow. The road journey is purgatory. Train is the answer. There are trains every few minutes to Victoria, taking only 35 minutes. That's a short cab ride to the hotel. Avoid trains branded 'Express' which cost much more but save you only a couple of minutes.

Tell us more about your plans for arrival day and the rest of your stay - we need this info to give advice on best tickets.

Thank you! We are in London for 5 days then taking the Eurostar to Paris. The option above will work the best I think. Do we need to purchase the train tickets in advance online?

If you're talking about the Eurostar tickets, it's best to purchase those in advance, as last-minute tickets will likely be about twice the price. Advance purchase is not necessary for the tickets from Gatwick to central London, though.

There is no need to book in advance. At the Gatwick rail station simply ask for singles for the next Southern service to London Victoria. Anytime fare is £15 per person and you may use the tickets on any Southern service - look for a fast train rather than a stopping train for the trip to take about 35 minutes.

Before you leave Victoria, stop at the rail ticket office on the main concourse (across from platforms 14 and 15) and buy seven day Travelcards which you may use with the two for one offers discussed in the two traveller articles under Top Questions About London (at the right of the forum). You may print your own passport size picures or have them made at a local shop. Seven day cards for zones 1 and 2 for £31.40 should be sufficient for your stay.
