Hotel/B&B Location, and suggestions for day trips?

The wife and I are heading to London for the first time and plan to spend 4-5 nights there. We certainly enjoy B&Bs and boutique hotels. I am clueless as to the choice areas in and around London that would be a good home base for us with fairly easy access to the major tourist sites within London (of course, we also plan to do some day trips to other areas and would appreciate your thoughts as to what day trips would be appealing).

Thanks for your thoughts/suggestions.

You will get better replies if you provide a budget per night, in pounds. Also, if you give people a clue or two about your interests, they can provide better advice. With so few nights in London you might give a thought to just staying in London. Alternatively, two places easy to reach from London by train would be Windsor Castle or Hampton Court Palace. Each takes about 2/3 of a day, including transport.

You can choose virtually any area in Central London or even a bit further out because the transport system of overground trains, underground trains and buses will get you from A to B easily from any location.

Having said that perhaps start by looking at Bloomsbury, Kensington, Covent Garden and the South Bank area. You can't go wrong with any of these.

Two days out have already been mentioned and they are good choices. Within an hours train journey from Central London you can also be in Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury and many more too and all are attractive and interesting locations.

St. Albans would be a nice day out from the city.
