London apartment stay, May 2014

We are a family of four - children are 18 and 20 - looking for a central apartment to stay for 4 nights in May. Questions are:

- the best deals seem to be in Southward/Tower Bridge area. Is that because it is a less safe or less interesting area?

- amazon local offers a very good rate on apartments in the amazon local service, via aparthotels. Is this legit?

- Nightlife is not very important for us, but it seems that Soho/West End is more "happening", St James and Mayfair more elegant/pricey. Is it worth the premium to stay there?

- any other tips on the best areas to stay in central London?

- budget would be 180-280GBP/night

Southwark and Tower Bridge are across the river from one another, but both are reasonable places where one could stay. Depending on the flats you are considering transport by bus may be better for some journeys than the Underground, but that really is location-dependent.

I've no idea what amazon (Mr Bezos seems determined to want to buy and sell the world; it's more than a little frightening in some respects) offer - have you a link? In the interim, try this for some rated short stay letting agents and websites: https:/…

Given the choice between Mayfair and Tower Hill I would choose the latter without hesitation; others' views will vary. Rates for flats in St James and Mayfair would be at the high end of your budget in any event.

Thank you for the response. FYI, what Mr Bezos is offering is ApartHotel London, on Tower Bridge Road in Southwark, a few blocks south of the RR tracks.

I will keep the tip about using buses in mind, as this location seems to be about a 10 minute walk from the London Bridge station.

Thanks for the link. The flats are fairly new, not far from another (decent) short stay building, Think Tower Bridge Road. The location isn't bad at all, as you say about 10 minutes' walk from London Bridge station and nicely served by buses, with Abbey Street the nearest stop: …tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/maps/buses/pdf/cit…

There is a Sainsbury's Local a few steps away, near the Premier Inn, and an M&S Simply Food just off Tooley Street, but the biggest grocery stores are the Waitrose just off The Highway (the number 100 from Tower Gateway goes there), a large Sainsbury's in Whitechapel and a branch of Lidl in the Old Kent Road.

The flat looks good and the area is quite decent If you're willing to travel a little longer than you would with a more central stay it's certainly worth a stay.
