Train or hire car

We are staying at the Ibis Earls Court in August and need to travel to sherbourne for a wedding. My question is do we pay the overly priced train fare of $179 each ( there are 2 of us) or can I catch a train from our hotel to just outside of London and hire a car for a couple of days. I have had a look at hire car companies but not sure which station is close to a hire car company. Sorry for the long-windedl question but would really appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

We don't use dollars in the UK, so the number you quote is meaningless. The off peak train fare is £58 per person - is that the fare you are seeing?

You can get 33% off that with a "two together" railcard, but that costs £30, so it only works for you if you'd be making other journeys by rail.

If you're asking about "Sherborne" in Dorset - please note the spelling.

Unless the tickets are shown as "advance" they are not usually the cheapest - depending on the operating company these tickets are released approximately 8-12 weeks before date of travel.

But remember, these tickets will be for a specific train and are non refundable if you don't take that train.

Do a dummy booking for the dates that have been released and see if they're cheaper, then start comparing to hire car prices.

The cheapest advance fare you can get on this route is £12 each way. However you can only see fares until the 2nd July at the moment.

Check fares from Waterloo.
