Temple Station

Hoping someone can advise us. We are staying at the Swissotel and I think the Temple station is the closest tube stop. We were hoping to take public transport to the hotel. What is the stair situation at the Temple stop? We will only have one medium-size rolling bag each and a carry-on which stacks on the handle.

We surmised that Hammersmith was the best transfer point based on the helpful advise of TA. Is that correct? Thanks in advance.

There are stairs. Not a huge number according to the www.tfl.gov.uk.

10 to the booking hall and a further 30 or so to the platforms though the flight is broken up into smaller sections.

If you're arriving at LHR and taking the tube, then yes, do change from the Piccadilly line to the District line at Hammersmith. The eastbound District line shares the platform with the Piccadilly line, and it's about 15 steps from one train to the other - one of the easier changes on the tube.

Sit towards the front of the District line train, maybe the second carriage from the front, as that's where the way out is for the eastbound service. The road that runs uphill from the station towards the Strand is Arundel Place, and Temple Place is the cross street.

If you want to use the buses to and from the rest of London, walk up Arundel Place to the Strand. There's a bus stop just to the right (in front of the Yorkshire Building Society, at Essex Street) where you can catch the number 6 or 15 towards Oxford Street or the number 11 towards Victoria. If you want the number 9, turn left at the Strand and walk a few minutes to the next stop (past St Mary le Strand), as buses that terminate at the Aldwych will come around and start their journeys from that stop towards the West End - the number 9 Routemaster will stop there.

To get to the City, walk to the Strand, then turn to the right, to the bus stops in front of the Royal Courts of Justice. The number 11 and 23 towards Liverpool Street will stop there, as well as the number 15 towards St Paul's and Tower Hill. There are Routemasters running on the number 15 route, if you fancy a trip on that bus, as well.
