London during Virgin Triathlon Aug 2-3

Hi there,

Just found out we are going to be arriving in London right when the Virgin Triathlon is taking place & from what I have heard alot of road closures in down town London. How difficult will it be to get around (even on foot) during this event to do some sight seeing? Are there specific sights that will not be affected & we should plan to see those during this time or should we do a day trip out of London? Thanks so much for any help.

I doubt 99% of people will even notice it as it's not a large event - only 13000 contestants

Other way round, "what sites will be affected" because very few will. Its possible / likely that access to Buckingham Palace will be restricted as its often a start or finish point and the swim may be in Hyde Park so there would be restrictions there. Other than that, as Alan says, I doubt you'd notice unless you were crazy enough to be driving a car. Most certainly there will be no need to leave London!

London is a very big place and major events (ie those that would swamp the facilities of an average city) scarcely cause a ripple to 99% of it.

If by some remote chance your plans for a particular site are affected then be flexible and prepared to do something different - similar advice applies for weather !

Last year a lot of it was around Excel - which means that even locals wouldn't notice it

This year is also based on the Excel centre, but the route does go into parts of central London -

About the event

"For those taking part in the Olympic distance, part of the course weaves past some of the city's most famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge, the London Eye and Big Ben.

The bike courses will all benefit from road closures, a rarity in central London, which will allow competitors to race on traffic free roads".

PS to OP: << I have heard alot of road closures in down town London >>

Down Town is not a term that means anything in London. But assuming you mean some part of the large central London area, even when some of the roads are closed (for robably short times) there are always routes around - or just get on the Underground and go underneath the problem areas
