Trooping the Colour - How best to plan for 1st day in London

We arrive at Heathrow at 11 a.m. the same day as Trooping the Colour. I'm not sure how best to plan for making the most of our first day in London anticipating crowds and traffic congestion. We only have three days in London so want to make the most of our time. We have hotel reservations at Rubens at the Palace.

Any recommendations? Tips for avoiding too much crowding?

By the time you get through customs and travel to Central London and your hotel it will probably all be over and the crowds dispersing. Anyhow it only affects the area around Buckingham Palace and the Mall so if you go to Victoria station near your hotel then you can head off to any part of London as normal.

You will be too late for the parade, unfortunately.

However, you will be able to go to some of the private gardens that are open that weekend for London Open Squares weekend, and relax over coffee and cakes with local Londoners.

Cadogan Place and Eaton Square would be good places to visit that are near to your hotel.

Good info about the gardens. Thank you! So, the crowds don't stay around? With our hotel near Buckingham Palace I'm concerned about being able to travel from the airport to the hotel just as the crowds are dispersing.

I wish we were getting there in time to enjoy the pageantry instead of swimming upstream against those departing!

The last thing that happens is that there is a fly past as the Royal Family appear on the balcony of the palace and that is timetabled for 1pm. After that the crowds disperse.
