Travel Cards - Trip to Bath

Hello,

Was wondering if using travel cards gets us a reasonable discount on tickets to Bath (from Paddington)? . I was just checking the website and looks like tickets to Bath on the 27th June for 2 adults and 1 child come to 60 pounds each way! We are not buying tickets in advance and would like to buy them over the counter, depending on schedules.

Also can travel cards/oyster cards be brought at East Ham station?

You can get an off peak return for two adults and a child for £108.90 which can be used on any service between Paddington & Bath after 10:30am. If you want to travel earlier the price goes up by £30. Both can be bought on the day

Oystercards can be obtained at East Ham which can be loaded with Travelcards and cash but they won't be eligible for the 2-4-1 offers

Think the nearest station to buy NR Travelcards will be Barking - but make clear to the booking clerk you want them issued on NR ticket stock, not on Oyster. They will not give you anything off your trip to Bath

"We are not buying tickets in advance and would like to buy them over the counter, depending on schedules."

Well that was your choice to pay for the extra flexibility, buying advance tickets a few weeks ago would have saved you money.

However, as Alan says, the tickets won't cost you '£60 each way', the total cost for three of you if you travel out on the 1030 train or later will be £108.90 total. This is a discounted fare for traveling as a group (so you must all travel together, but I'm sure you planned on that anyway). You will receive three adult tickets - this is not a mistake as the discount means that it's cheaper than separate adult and child tickets (the price for the same ticket for one adult is £55 and for one child is £27.50 so you would pay £137.50 if you bought two adult and one child tickets).

On Mondays to Fridays:

Off-peak returns are valid for travel on the 08.30, 09.00, 09.30 and 10.00 departures from Paddington, return by any train the same day. Cost £136.65 with Groupsave discount applied.

Super Off-peak returns are valid on the 10.30 and later departures (up to 15.00), return by any train the same day. Cost £108.90 with Groupsave discount applied.

These tickets are also available for return on subsequent days up to one month later of you are staying more than one day, but there are restrictions on using the return portion on Monday-Friday morning trains. into London.

On Saturdays and Sundays Super Off-peak tickets are valid on all trains without restriction.

Off-peak and Super Off-peak are 'walk up' fares and can be bought at Paddington Station on the day. Allow 15 minutes for queuing at the ticket office.

I meant to say Cost = total cost for two adults and one child for the return journey.

Thanks a lot. This means that I just walk to the station counter and ask for tickets and depending on the timings, they will provide us with appropriate tickets. Have I understood this right or should I specify the times?

Depends on what you ask for - if you ask for an off peak return they will just sell it to you. If you just ask for a return they should ask about what trains you want to catch so as to sell you the right ticket
