Archeology sites near London

I'm in London August 2-9

Is there an archeologist site nearby? Close enough to take a day trip? Using public transportation

Disappointingly for you, there is a festival of archaeology taking place just before you arrive: July 12 to 27

www.archaeologyfestival.org.uk

However the festival has 60 events happening in London and, browsing the list, you should get a sense of what will still be possible to visit when you are here.

They may be blocked to those living outside the UK but there are a number of Channel 4's Time Team programmes on YouTube. They should be interesting for anyone into archaeology. Search for Time Team.

You can see the remains of the Roman wall and amphitheatre without leaving London.

Use a search engine for 'visible roman London' and it will have a section from the Museum of London.

I enjoy the London Roman Ampitheatre at the Guildhall Art Gallery and I saw the London Roman baths when I took a short Roman archeology course - they're located under an office building and aren't open to the public.

Probably the largest archeology dig going on at the moment is being done by Crossrail. Again, probably not open to the public, but you can always contact them and ask.

The remains of the old monastic infirmary can be seen next to the Little Cloister at Westminster Abbey.

Sorry for the delay. I had trouble finding my question.

I suppose about an hour by train would be OK
