Best passes and travel cards for a couple in London

Hi All,

Opening up yet another Oyster/Travelcard thread so that it doesn't confuse OPs on existing threads.

We are a couple who will stay in London for 5 days, then travel outside for a week, and then be back in London for an additional week ( of which 2 days might be an outing to the cotswolds). Sorry if this sounds complicated. I believe we will be commuting from a suburb based in zone 4 (ouch?).

So it's a 19 day holiday of the UK of which 10 in total will be in London.

1) If we purchase a 10 day oyster, will that be enough for all the days we are in London ?

2) If we buy a 1 week travelpass on arrival, we will only be able to use it for the first 5 days, right ?

And I'm guessing that for the 2for1 offer, it's a matter of buying an eligible travel card for the day. Or is there a better way to do all this ?

1) You cannot buy a 10 day Oyster. You can get an Oyster card and load with a 7 day travelcard (cheaper than 5 x 1 day travelcards), and some PAYG if desired.

2) Yes it will be valid for 7 days from whenever you start it.

For the 2for1 you can buy 7 day travelcards (require passport sized photo) on paper. You could do this on both legs of the trip evven with 2 days out since you will still presumably travel in London on the inbound and outbound side trip.

I would try and do the Cotswolds bit in the middle rather than when you've come back to London. And if you can move in closer than zone 4. It's not just the extra time and cost of travel, it's the sheer misery of commuting on overcrowded trains and buses.

In which suburb will you be staying? On that depends whether National Rail weekly travelcards plus PAYG would be best

Thank you. A 7 day travelcard it is.

We'll be staying with friends at St Margaret's near Richmonds. We have previously been to London and done the tourist rounds, but hoping to some museums and theaters this time around.

You will probably do best to buy a 7-day Travelcard each at St Margaret's station, which qualifies for the 2for1 deals for your two stints in London. Take your trips outside on the days on which your 7 day cards are not valid.

Don't forget you will need a passport sized photo for the photocard (free) the booking clerk will give you
