Any ideas for last minute West Country weekend?

We're toying with the idea of spending a night or 2 somewhere in Devon or Cornwall over Labor Day weekend (the weekend after the Bank Holiday for those in the UK). We've done some driving around, but haven't made it as far as Cornwall yet. Does anyone have any suggestions? (I'll do some research on my own, I promise!)

Try this

I's near the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which are utterly divine.

Verity

You will not find a better destination than tintagel, look at my notes posted. We spend two romantic and wonderful days at the Camelot Castle Hotel, it overlooks Tintagel the ancient site of Camelot, home of King Arthur. Just google it. The atmosphere was wonderful, great food, great staff, great rooms.

PS - I live on the South Coast of Enland, so am used to nice views etc, but the was the Best!! - you can't go go cornwall and not visit Tintagel

Into Art Decco Hotels. try Burgh Island Hotel

quite unique in UK if not Europe.

Cornwall take emergency rations if going down by car

Burgh Island charming.

Tintagel done in an hour - tacky tourist tat.

Bedruthen steps spectacular for stepped descent onto roaring beaches.

I rather like Modbury down to Salcombe, step out in to deepest darkest night & count the stars. Flete Estate has nice little cottages, very private, very discrete.

Sidmouth & Budleigh Salterton relatively genteel & charming.

Great tea room at BS, just step over the piddling stream in the main road. Nice walk along the estuary to the sea.

Of course, you could opt for the groovy weekend offer at the Hotel Barcelona in Exeter, & take in a fish supper at the Drewe Arms.

Recently got down to Brixham (note, must do trip report). Can recommend the PoopDeck seafood restaurant (14 The Quay Brixham). Avoid Berry Head Hotel (overpriced & overated). The Brookside B&B on New Road Brixham highly commended by one of our party - recently & stylish refurbished & great fresh buffet breakfast.

Of course, you could cut down to Sennen Cove for some surfin' UK. Newquay a bit KissMeQuick by comparison.

Just a few things to consider.

You might consider winding your way down to Coverack, one of the more southerly Cornich places. Head for Goonhilly & keep going. Very leafy, seaward & rmote. Airy Victorian youth Hostel. Some windsurfin' & eary morning mackerel fishing. From hazy recall, Roskilly ice cream made in these parts.

St Ives is rather nice once the crowds have gone home. Tate Gallery interesting as is Barbara Hepworth museum. Charming winding cobbled Cronish village streets, many doors into indie galleries. Hellish in tourist season, far better when quieter.

Of course , you head onto Dartmoor. Chagford is a small stannary town. Full of character & small shops. Good pub Ring Of Bells ( or bag of nails, something like that) for slosh & nosh.

Having read reviews of Camelot hotel not sure I would risk it. But Blue hayes St Ives is wonderful - but may be already fully booked - what about Falcon at Bude or Port Gaverne - just a few minutes walk from Port Issac? Views at Tides Reach fantastic.

Well, how about the Fooey-Looey-&-Polpooey pub crawl?

We're going to visit Fowey, Looe and Polperro in a single day ourselves this fall. But since we don't drink, we will be making better time than folks sampling the beverages, so we may make it all the way to Lanhydrock, too. (We've been there before and really liked it. It has stupendous roses.) We've heard from several friends that the 3 small towns are charming and worth a walkabout, so that's what we're going to do. It involves a short ferry ride at one point.

According to beerintheevening, the highest rated pub (of this area) is the Crumplehorn Inn at Polperro, with 4 ales and very nice accommodation. The Old Mill House at Polperro, or the Globe at Looe, with 3 ales, have Sunday roast. The Ship Inn, also in Polperro, has "excellent beer" and Thursday quiz night. Fowey has 3 pubs on the harbor or quay.

Maybe St Mawes. Hotel Tresanton has a superb location and good food. Lunch at the Rising Sun is great - water taxi across to Place Manor and walk out to Fraggle Rock aka St Anthonys Head.

Has castle as well. Ferry to Falmouth or Truro or Trelissick.

Head around to Portscatho - hotel there is good for lunch.

And I think a little further up was the location of Camomile Lawn?

Lanhydrock worth a visit. Maybe get a lastminute National Trust billet therein ?

Ultimate West Country getaway - from Exeter or Penzance helicopter over to the Isles of Scilly !

Several 5 stars hotels (on seperate isles) to choose from or just B&B. Few cars so you walk walk & wander as you please. Motorised gigs tour the isles throughout the day to isle hop (like a bus service) or seal/puffin watch. Beautiful clean beaches & rugged outcrops for exploring. Some prehistoric burrows (Tresco mthinks), &indeed Tresco's gardens. Forgotten the name of thepub on Tresco that did B&B.....very nice, stayed for several days.
