Tourist Scams

Good article here: justtheflight.co.uk/blog/16-40-tourist-scams…

I had a woman try the Gold Ring Scam on me near Victoria Station. One scam I didn't see on the list is the "I've been injured and need money for a cab to go to the hospital scam". Some guy tried that on me while I was having coffee and cake at an outdoor table at the Fleet River Bakery.

I'm not sure if this was an attempt at pickpocketing, but my wife and I were stopped on the street (near the Houses of Parliament, as best as I recall) by a group (about 5 or 6) young foreign tourists. One girl in the group had a map and was asking for directions. They clustered around us as my wife helped with the directions. I quickly became nervous and stepped away from the group.

I've posted this before, but a good article as well: http://www.btp.police.uk/theft/index.html

TexScott,

Using a map to cover theft of articles (usually mobile phones) put on tables whilst the owners enjoy a coffee at the table whether inside or out is very common (and a reason not to put your phone on the table). The map is spread out on the table (over the phone) in a request for "help".

It sounds as though this variation is a vertical pickpocketing scam instead.
