Heathrow Airport - Things to do?

My gf and I are flying out to New York in September, as we live over 4 hours away from London, we are planning on staying over the night before, we get into London at 5pm and our flight is at 2pm the following day.

We are torn whether to stay in central London and take the tube into Heathrow the morning of the flight, or stay over around Heathrow. If we were to get to Heathrow around 6pm, would there be anything to do to keep us entertained, shops, restaurants etc??

Any help is much appreciated :)

No.

Stay in London. No-brainer, because you have more time that evening (since you'll be passing through London on the way to Heathrow anyway), tons of stuff to do - heck, go and see show, and plenty of time to get to Heathrow in the morning missing out on the rush hour. Leave London at 10am to be there at 11am for a 2pm flight.

Yes, that itinerary is ideal for having a night in London. There's no point, unless you are really on a budget, in staying out at Heathrow. There's very little to do compared to the capital, and you would waste a lot of time going back and fore to the centre of London to find something to do.

Look at hotels along the Piccadilly line (tube) as you'll then have a straight shot to Heathrow with no changes. Earl's Court (35 mins from LHR), KIngs Cross (55), Bloomsbury (Russell Square/Holborn, 50 from LHR) are popular areas with good budget hotels.
