Flights from London to LA

Hi

We are planning a trip to California next summer (July/August) and wondered if anyone has any ideas about how to get hold of cheap flights from London (any airport) to LA. At the moment the cheapest I can find is over £700 per person. We would prefer direct flights but would consider stop overs if it made a big difference to the price.

Thanks

Where else can you get that far at that time of year (ie the busiest) for that cost?

The cheapest flights tend to be on unfashionable airlines, or from European destinations. Why not consider flying to Frankfurt or AMsterdam and pick up a flight there?

It may be worth holding tight, and keeping an eye out for special offers. I fly to LA regularly, and have managed to find decent fares in the past for August, but not this far in advance. Virgin and BA have sales every now and again, as does AA. Best to monitor their websites over the coming months.

You could have a look at www.ebookers.com too, but they aren't always the most competitive. Sometimes Expedia has good deals too.

It's rare that a direct flight (which, confusingly, means it has a stopover) is much cheaper than a non-stop flight. There is usually a difference in price, but not enough (for me, anyway) to warrant choosing a direct flight over a non-stop flight. But, again, check the various websites to compare.

Most airlines will let pax book about 350 days in advance of travel. The major airlines usually don't make too many changes to their schedules for major cities (BA have been flying YVR-LHR-YVR on the same timetable for at least eight or nine years), but changes could happen. The airline accounting boffins also need to try to extrapolate the data to figure out what costs will be, what the market will bear (!!) as well as future fuel costs, employee wages, catering costs, etc etc.

As peterscot said, £700 isn't bad at all for LHR-LAX - but it's more than a ticket from LAX-LHR, which is irritating. You could try going ex-AMS, if that works, or find a cheapo cheapo to JFK or EWR, then change to one of the US low cost carriers.

Or, wait for the sales, which usually are advertised in September and January. The airlines will post the fares in advertisements and send email alerts to pax on their mailing lists, so if you have a favourite airline, you might want to sign up for the email bumph now.

Maybe look for an open jaw - into SFO and out from LAX or Vegas?

Sometimes you'll be suprised what deals can be had when talking to people like Trailfinders.

Or if you just want to stay in LA perhaps get a 'Holiday' deal - flight and accomodation together.

hi she57-You may want to wait and see. it's about a year off and currently the airlines have their fall and winter fare sales. Nothing for next summer yet. You may want to start looking Jan/Feb 2007 for prices. I'll have to say though, July and August are peak season and lots of people want to go to California during this time of year. The prices will still be higher than non-peak season. If you can wait, Sept, October, and sometimes November are beautiful times to go to LA. It can still be warm during these months.

It maybe cheaper to have a package deal(hotel+air or hotel+air+car) as packages tend to be a little cheaper when bundled together. Good luck with your search!
