If you paid for admission to the gallery it must have been the Courtauld Gallery. If you paid just for a temporary exhibition it would have been the National Gallery or National Portrait Gallery. There are also sometimes exhibitions in the Canadian High Commission, but I think they are usually free. Also possible that it was the Institute of Contemporary Arts, but I'm guessing one of the first three.

A few other possibilities:

I don't know whether one ever has to pay for their exhibitions.
