Train to oxford

Ok so if we take an am train to oxford for the day how the heck do you figure out what pm train to take back. Booking early seems to save quite a bit of $ but don't have any idea how long of a day we'll need. Maybe we should pre-book am and purchase pm on the day. Any ideas?

If you want a cheap advance ticket you must decide when you buy it what trains you want to use.

If you want flexibility don't bother prebooking - just buy a day return ticket on the day - preferably off peak. That way you can come back whenever you are ready

On the 0921 and later trains an off peak day return is £24.20. Any return train.

An offpeak single is £24.10, so however cheap an advance is for the outward journey it won't help buying it separately

As said above, book a day return and come back on any train you want. You'll save money buying an Advance ticket but you will lose all flexibility as you can only take one specific train out and one specific train back.

About how much do you save booking in advance?

You really need to look it up yourself - if you are going to book in advance you are going to need to anyway

https://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/

It varies by day/date - you might save £10 a head, £5 or even nothing at all. And many trains do not offer advance fares anyway. There can be gaps of several hours between services - plenty of trains in that gap but only at normal fares
